Hello,

I am not sure if anyone is following our blog anymore…we had some difficulties and had to shut it down for a bit. Someone who read our blog found some parts “offensive”. We have decided that there is nothing wrong with what we have written and hopefully we can use this as a better way to communicate with our loved ones back home.

In brief, things are well. We have done a lot over the last month in terms of travel, learning more about this culture, and just living life here. Our days are incredibly full and fast paced, but very enjoyable. Things have begun to cool off here and I have been sick with a cold of late. Boo Hoo….it is funny hoe plus 10 can be so chilly :)

We recently purchased a Nissan Pathfinder, so it has been pretty awesome experiencing the freedom of driving again. Hopefully that will allow us to manage our time a little differently and enable us to spend more time on important things, like talking with the ones we love back in Canada.

I just wanted to write a quick post explaining things, and hopefully we will have a few more items to post shortly.

Take care,

Chris and Christie

We have begun to settle into more of a routine here in Kuwait. It has taken a lot of time for that process to work itself out, but we are beginning to be able to feel more comfortable with our surroundings and predict our day to day lives by figuring out how we can do things here to adjust well.

School has been a really fantastic experience so far. My students are pretty incredible, and now that I have my technology set up in my classroom I am able to make interesting and engaging lessons each day. This really helps with classroom management as the students seem to be really interested in what we are learning. I remembered a site that Bryan Belous showed me called Prezi, and it has been a great way to create lessons for my students. Here is a link;

Rob…you would love this site! Check it out if you haven’t already done so… Im usually a little behind on this sort of thing!

I have been impressed with the way the students consume the topics we discuss and their level of conversation and understanding. It has been a pretty big shift from last year, but very rewarding. Even though my students are in grade 6/7, we can have conversations that are well above their grade level. That has been a real blessing and has made the job very enjoyable overall.

The staff are also incredible. They are very professional, hard working and love their jobs and students. This makes for a great atmosphere and a wonderful place to experience our introduction to living and working overseas. Christie and I are tutoring two brothers twice a week, so that means we can hang out a bit on those nights. Each of us tutors almost every weeknight, so it can be hard to find time to spend together. Tutoring is insane money, and not too difficult so it is hard to pass up. It also keeps us rather busy, which means the savings potential here is huge as you don’t have as much opportunity to spend money. Ohhhhhh the Bushwakker, how I miss you, but my bank account is happier, and so is my belly :) As Dwayne always said, if you cut out Wheat Beverages from your daily caloric intake you really can lose some pounds!

Christie has accepted a job offer from a hospital here in Kuwait. One of the teachers here at the school was able to connect her with a doctor and he was very helpful in setting things up and working through the contract. It appears that she will have an opportunity to gain experience professionally that she wouldn’t have the opportunity to back home. This is an exciting opportunity but there are still many unknowns.  Christie has had some time off the last 2 weeks to explore some of the city and make our place feel more like  a ‘home’.

We have fallen into a wonderful community of people here and find ourselves blessed with the opportunity to hang out with great people on a daily basis. It is so interesting to live in community without really having to have organized it at all. This is something we never really expected. For many years we have read about and be challenged by the idea of living in community with others. Through our time with the Cappelo’s, Robichaud’s, books, or conversations with family and friends, we have often wondered and been challenged to think about how being in a community with others is beneficial. Being here, living in the same building, and working together has fostered this belief and helped us look at the potential we have here to bless and be blessed by others on a daily basis, and to pursue purposeful living. One wonderful example was on Wednesday night when a couple from Manitoba and Ontario invited us over to watch NHL HOCKEY!!! They are able to download the games they want and tend to watch a few each week. So my friends, I was able to see the Oiler Season opener! Very wonderful, and it will be great to hang out with some people from Canada and enjoy something that reminds us of home. Yes, even Christie enjoyed seeing those players in Orange and Blue….out of the corner of her eye I am guessing, as she visited :)

There are many things here that are difficult as well. We miss out family and friends. The human rights concerns are frustrating and disheartening, and we have yet to find a place similar to where we would TRY to go to on Sunday mornings. This part will come in time, but it is very difficult to work out. This has, however, been balanced out with the wonderful people here and the ways in which we are seeing love in action on a daily basis. We have begun to make some very strong friendships here, and covet the time we get to hang out with others when we are not busy tutoring :)

CHRISTIE’S UPDATE:

Hi Everyone, I’m finally jumping on board and doing a little blogging myself!  I’m not letting Chris steal the show anymore!  (: Ok, that makes it sound like our updates are a real thrill… there’s only so much excitement to share as we’re more or less into a routine here!

So, right now, I’m sitting in our living room listening to Chris play guitar… I like that he’s been playing again… I’ve been doing a lot of baking, so I am eating a muffin… I’ve also started drinking tea like it’s going out of style…  I decided to paint the walls brown the other week and it certainly makes the space feel a bit cozier!  Our couches and curtains are a brilliant gold colour, which has challenged every ounce of decorating talent that I have inside of me.

And…..this blog was not finished :) But we will post it anyways :)

And she has a job………..

First Blog Update From Chris

Well, we are here and are beginning to adjust to all that has been thrown at us over the last several days.

First impressions in one word; amazing!

What an experience so far. We are incredibly impressed with the way the school has taken care of us and what a wonderful situation we seem to have entered into. There are so many things that we have had to process so far regarding the country, jobs, climate, COMMUNICATION (internet and phones could be a separate blog unto themselves!) etc.

Our apartment is more impressive than we had expected. Its roomy, has a couple washrooms, amazing view, and best of all, a bidet. Now, for those of you who have never used a bidet, it is a steady laser of water that you shoot towards your rectum. I will be honest, I had hoped that this would be a new and wonderful thing for me and that I could become addicted to that fresh clean feeling of a pampered bomb post pooping. I am sure Christie is wishing she could filter my typing right now, but I feel a certain amount of vulnerability is necessary if we are to truly discuss our experiences here. In any event, I tried it out. And the verdict is….disapointing. I will filter the details at this point, but suffice to say it is not the experience I had conjured up in my mind :)

That has been a consistent feeling so far here in Q8; not what we/I had expected. Its actually greener than I had thought. The apartments are better than I had thought. The temperature more bearable than I had thought. Internet slower than I had thought the driving less crazy than I had thought…… overall a very humbling, reflective, wonderful, challenging and exciting adventure.

We have many decisions to make over the next few weeks. This first month will allow us to figure out our expenditures a bit more and what we will need to ‘survive’ and balance the comforts of home that might keep us sane, and the embracing of the opportunity to try new things and create new patterns and habits. When people told us this was an ‘easy city’ in terms of having everything, they meant it. For example, lovely fresh Salmon cheaper than Regina available at the food market. Wish we had those Cedar planks!!!

Christie had an interview yesterday…very interesting. I will let her explain it all, but suffice to say it is different here :) We are still figuring things out. We do not have civil ID’s as of yet, so it took some time to get our phones and a wireless internet stick. The wires are all cut to our complex due to contraction so we have to rely on the stick. It is very very slow in Mahboula, the area we live, so until the situation changes communication could be fairly sporadic. Once again, not what we had totally expected, yet totally ok. All these little things have really left us spinning at trying to reorient ourselves within this new culture. Either you embrace it and know its out of your hands, or else it could really bother you. We have seen and heard both reactions when things are not ‘as we ahd planned’. So far, all the his ups have only added to the joy of being here.

So far there has been a lot of training for me at the school. We arrived at almost Midnight Wednesday and have worked steady everyday ever since. We arrive at the school by 9 and work till 2, then have an hour or 2 free time before we join more orientation with all the newbies. We have been taken grocery shopping, to a fine Lebanese restaurant, to a private health clud/Hotel (the Hilton with one of the principles who we have come to really enjoy), and tonight we will have some free time on our own for the first time. Several of us are heading down town and walking the bay. Its the breaking of Ramadan tonight and the beginning of Ead, so there should be some excitement when everyone breaks the fast for the last time.

I will try and get better at organizing things by topics and keeping a better focus. Right now I think this is as much therapeutic processing than informative writing :) But things are great here; the Administration at the Elementary, Middle School and High School are AWESOME, so great, and the support staff is so professional. Very nice environment. ooops, there I go on a tangent….

In any event, we love you and miss you all, but are excited with that we are experiencing here. Please keep us in your thoughts.

Lots of Love,

Chris and on behalf of Team C and C :)

Party Tonight

We are heading to the Cappello’s tonight to celebrate our leaving soon enough. It is fitting that this be our first official blog…however, I was hoping that I would leave that prestigious event till after we arrive and I have the opportunity to try out the bidet :) I suppose you will have to just wait for that one.

To be honest, neither of us have totally embraced the idea of having a blog site (Hello opportunity for narcissism???), however, as we prepare to leave, I have found (I being ‘Chris’), that my attitude at least, has changed and I can see how useful it can be. Diddo for Facebook :) So we are hopeful that we can use both well.

In any event, we hope that there will be a few people to read this, and that we find it a good way to spend our time over the next while as we begin this adventure.

Sincerely,

The Senger’s in Q8
